Safety

  • GPS – I personally use the navigation system on my iPhone.
  • Physical Map – as a backup incase the GPS stops working.
  • Jumper Cables – you never know when you (or someone else’s) battery may die.
  • AAA Card – if you have a service such as AAA, make sure you bring your card.
  • Spare Tire and Jack – make sure your spare is in good condition!
  • Car Manual and Insurance
  • Emergency Kit – this should include items such as flashlights, batteries, a warm blanket, water, and tools.

Comfort

  • Sleeping Mask – if you want to take a daytime nap, a sleeping mask will make it easier to fall asleep.
  • Light Blanket – if you run cold like I do, a light blanket is a good choice!
  • Pillow – whether you prefer a neck pillow or traditional one, it will make you more comfortable if you decide to get some shut eye.
  • Lotion – I always feel a little dry when traveling, so like to keep lotion in the car and reapply when needed.
  • Sunglasses – when it is your turn to drive, sunglasses will come in handy!
  • Hair Ties – if applicable.

Entertainment

  • Headphones – when you need to tune out, playing some music or a podcast on your headphone will give you some peace/
  • Book/Kindle – if you don’t get motion sick, reading is a great time to pass the time.
  • Charger – don’t forget your chargers to keep your devices going!
  • Journal/Pens – I like to keep track on my thoughts and memories by journaling. Get a set of cute pens to make it more enjoyable.
  • Travel Games – some of my favorites include MadLibs and Sudoku.

Wellness

  • Hand sanitizer – a must after pumping gas or stopping for a meal.
  • Wet Wipes – for the things that hand sanitizer can’t clean.
  • Snacks – to refuel for more traveling.
  • Water Bottle – staying hydrated is important.
  • First Aid Kit – you may not need it, but you will be thankful to have it if you do!
  • Tissues and Napkins
  • Medication – include daily routine medicine, as well as things you may need for pain or motion sickness.

Miscellaneous

  • Umbrella – incase it rains.
  • Cash/cards – having cash is essential for tolls and if some places do not accept cards. Also remember insurance cards.

By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable road trip. Happy travels!
